I'm really not that great at even basic math but somehow I manage to do my stats for work. The very first quilt I wanted to have quilted I was told would cost the penny and 1/2 per inch plus the cost of batting plus the cost of thread plus the binding if I chose. Somehow I worked this out to be around $250. I figured I'd never be able to get anything quilted. So last year when we decided to make all those quilts for our family members and we found WANDA who'd quilt anything we made for a flat $50-60 I was ecstatic. Thought I was getting a super duper discount deal. Wanda gets my quilts done in less than a week and she's still a super great resource = I recognize that. This is really about my math. So today we are having to call around for quilt estimates as I need these two quilts done TONIGHT! (yeah this is going to happen). Wanda went MIA sometime after Greg talked to her last Friday. Really worried there's been something major happen. Costs are all coming back as around $42.50 plus batting and thread. Wait? What happened to the hundreds? Then that sneaky suspicion that I've been paying about what I'd have paid with anyone. hmmm. Of course everyone laughed when I asked if they could get them done today. The problem is that I'm headed to my parent's Friday at 5pm. They live 3 hours away. In 2 weeks they are taking these quilts to relatives in Denver, Colorado- a day, day and 1/2 drive depending on which parent is behind the wheel. So I headed to my nearest quilting source to pick up batting and I was going to quilt these damn things on my own. They wouldn't have been as awesome - but they'd have functioned just fine even with tucks and lumps. I called my mom to tell her about a deal at the sewing center on sewing machines since she's looking to get a new one and mentioned my "I'm going to quilt these plan" I got an "oh". ??? She then tells me that she's got a lady she was going to call if I hadn't heard from my quilter. Really?? So first I'm annoyed that she obviously isn't impressed with my abilities - so what if my brothers quilt has a huge lump in the back that you have to beat into submission to use it - I MADE IT and I TRY hard with a crappy little walmart cheapy sewing machine that I ... reality sets in... YOU HAVE A QUILTER ON CALL?? WELL CALL HER - can she do them this weekend? We spend like 30 min on the phone while I'm in the batting isle debating price and the woman wanting $10 more per quilt to do them in front of others (PLEASE like this is even an obstacle) vs shipping them ($15-20 more). I feel SUPER guilty that this woman is going to put my silly little quilts in front of the fair kids quilts. But mom doesn't have a sewing machine that works nor does she know how to do binding. I'm leaving there on Monday and hope to be leaving finished quilts behind. And if not.. I might just be leaving my sewing machine behind.. YIKES!
So... I married a crazy, "get these done at the last possible minute and can you get these quilted for me by Friday?, yes I know its Wednesday night" quilter, I wouldn't want it any other way!!! The quilts look really great!!!!
ReplyDeleteYou know Brooke, I really do think that you can do these quilts on your own and do a fantastic job. You do have an inexpensive quilter tho...those are awesome prices. Just think of the money you would save if you brought a Pfaff (ha...had to put that plug in)...lots of good ones on ebay..truly.... You did a fantastic job on those quilts....
ReplyDeleteThe prices you get for quilts to be done are SO much lower than what we have to pay here. You are very lucky. Of course, last-minute isn't even a possibility here. I need to find a less expensive alternative...that's for sure. Anyway...I'm not good at quilting things myself, either. The only time I can do decent quilting is to use a decorative stitch and just do straight lines of it on my quilts. Other than that, it needs to be done by a professional. That is what makes quilting be so expensive...at least for me. I'm sure your quilts will look great. Be sure to take photos when they are finished by the quilter, okay?
ReplyDeleteI guess I am lucky....I have a quilter with two machines (one computer run) and she charges a penny a square inch then batting charges. I get them back in about 2 weeks. And she will meet me in town which is only 7 miles away...
ReplyDeleteShe is near St Louis if anyone is interested or close.
I am sure that your quilts will be beautiful..I love them both. I have a Pfaff 4.0 Expression, and it is a great quilting machine which allows me to do free motion quilting easily. It is a great machine!
